Taha Mohammed Nur, Co-Founder Of ELF, Died In Prison

By Gedab News - Feb 16, 2008

Mr. Taha Mohammed Nur, one of the co-founders of the Eritrean Liberation Front, died in prison in Eritrea. He is believed to be in his late sixties or early seventies.Taha had been in detention since November 2005.Neither he, nor the dozens of Eritrean citizens who were arrested with him—including the famous singer and veteran, Idris Mohammed Ali; the journalists Jimie Kmeil and Adem Selshel and ten other civil servants and business people--were charged with any crime or presented to a court of law by the Eritrean regime. Nor have any of the countless of Eritrean political prisoners who have been arrested before or since that time been brought to a court of law. The family of Taha Mohammed Nur were summoned by government authorities to collect his body and no explanation was given to them—not even about the circumstances of his death.

Background Mr. Taha Mohammed Nur was one of six intellectuals who founded the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF) in Cairo, Egypt, in 1960. The other founders, all university students or recent graduates (and one parliamentarian), were Idris Mohammed Adem, Idris Gelaydios, Mohammed Saleh Hummed, Said Hussain and Adem Mohammed Akte. They eventually became part of the ELF’s “Supreme Council” and called on Hamed Idris Awate, the father of the Eritrean revolution, to start the armed wing of the revolution. A graduate of a law school in Italy, Mr. Taha Mohammed Nur served the Eritrean revolution in various capacities including as the foreign relations officer of the ELF-PLF. A long time associate of Mr. Osman Saleh Sabbe, Taha returned to Eritrea after Eritrea’s independence.

In 1994, he was named one of the 50 commissioners of the Constitutional Commission of Eritrea, which was chaired by Dr. Bereket Habteselasse.

*Taha Mohammed Nur also served as a commissioner in the five-member Referendum Commission of Eritrea (as its secretary) in 1992-93. *additional information added after initial publishing.

"The struggle of man against power is the struggle of memory against forgetting”

― Milan Kundera, The Book of Laughter and Forgetting

This is not me. Really? He is me and I am him; actually I am not as handsome as this guy. I am not as intelligent as this guy. I am not that partiot as this guy. How many of you know who this wonderful creature is?

This guy is Dr Taha Mohamednur. May he rest in peace1 Alah Yirhamoo!

Dr. Taha Mohammed Nur is co-founder of the Eritrean Liberation Front (ELF). The PFDJ-government of Isaias Afewerki arrested him 2005. Around February 2008, his family were told to collect the body of their dad, son, uncle, teacher, freedom-fighter, brother, husband and many more. This guy who started fighting for the independence of Eritrea long before Isaias Afewerki was not even allowed to be buried in the Martyr's cemetry of Asmara. Because that cemetry is reserved for those who are liked by Isaias Afewerki. Others who questioned the "leadership" of Isaias Afewerki are not allowed to be buried in Eritrea and if they happen to be in Eritrea during the time of their death, then they are not allowed to be buried in the Martyr's cemetry.

You know what amazes me? The deafening silence by those within the Eritrean Government. No explination was given for the arrest and death of Dr. Taha Mohammed Nur.

1. Dr. Taha Mohammed Nur was one of the six intellectualls who founded the ELF in 1960 in Cairo, (The others were Adem Moahmmed Akte, Mohammed Saleh Hummed, Idris Gelaydios and Said Hussain) . 2. When he studied at the Cairo University, Boutros Boutros Gali (the Egyptian diplomat who later became the UN Secretary General) was his professor. He wrote paper about the independence of Eritrea and Boutros Ghali "threw" the paper on his face saying: "We don't know a country called Eritrea".

3. Eritrea became independent and Boutros Ghali arrived in Eritrea to witness the referendum. Dr. Taha Mohammed Nur was one of the referendum commissioners. He welcomed Boutros Ghali and reminded him of the aforementioned incident.

4. Dr. Taha went from Cairo to Rome to mobilize many Eritrean intellectuals for the Eritrean struggle.

5. He was also a member of the Eritrean Constitution Commission,
