  5. The Perilous Status of Eritrean Refugees

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

Read full source paragraph (2,552 characters)

Awate - Gedab News By Gedab News - Oct 20, 2008 About 80 Eritrean refugees have been languishing in the Ramle prison in the outskirts of Tel Aviv, Israel. They are kept in four cells numbered 11 to 14, twenty people to a cell. Approximately the same number of other African refugees are jailed in Ramle along with the Eritreans. The refugees who arrived in Israel in the beginning of 2008 were arrested last summer in and around Tel Aviv when they ventured outside their restricted camps in search of work. A judge has sentenced them to pay a fine of 1000 Shekels (apx. $266) each for their violation of a law which prevents them from venturing outside the camp. A refugee reached by telephone said, “though we are sentenced, we were not released and we don’t know the reason for delaying our release.” -- The Road To Israel The path to Israel often follows the Eritrea-Sudan-Egypt-Israel route. Several refugees were shot and killed by Egyptian patrols while crossing the border to Israel. Eritrean youth are escapting forced labor and indefinite military service imposed by the Eritrean regime on all Eritreans eighteen to fifty years old. Some Eritreans have been forced to serve in the military for over 13 years. In the last eight years alone, tens of thousand of Eritreans have crossed the Sahara Desert on foot, trekking to Europe through Libya, Malta and other countries. Last summer, Egypt forcefully returned hundreds of refugees back to Eritrea where their fate is still unknown. -- Ethiopia and Sudan -- To accomodate the large influx of military escapees and refugees, Ethiopia has been expanding its refugee camp in the Tigray region. The new camp is already housing around seven-thousand refugees. Shimelba, the largest refugee camp, houses over twenty thousand Eritrean refugees. The United States recently announced its decision to accept eight-thousand Eritrean refugees from Shimelba to resettle in the USA. Almost five hundred soldiers desert the Eritrean army every month and escape to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and Sudan. In Sudan, there are over half a million refugees who fled Eritrea during the Ethiopian occupation era and have not returned to Eritrea following its independence. Europe Sweden, Switzerland and Romania have decided to accept around seven-hundred Eritreans refugees for resettlement. The refugees have been in detention in Libyan prisons. In many EU nations, Eritreans account for the highest, or one of the highest, number of asylum seekers. Last Updated ( Oct 21, 2008 ) Source awate.com

  6. The opposition and PFDJ Leaders are the two sides of the same coin

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

According Gedab News source: There are Eritrean opposition organizations which have either chosen not to be part of the EDA, have had their application for membership suspended until they meet membership requirements or are in the process of joining the EDA. These include: EDF (led by Dr. Osman Abubeker); United Front (led by Mr. Ali Berhatu); Gash Setit Liberation Front (led by Mr. Ismael Nada), Qaza'if Alhaq (led by Mr. Idris Qaisem and Mr. Adem Mujaurai), EAIM faction (led by Mr. Yacob Indrias), and the Eritrean Cooperative Party (led by Mr. Herui Bairou.) It is difficult to know the size of these organization since most of them haven't had their organizational congresses. The aforementioned groups used to be members of a short-lived new alliance known as Congress Party (CP) and described by Herui T Bairou as a challenge to the EDA. But the Congress Party has fallen apart: Adem Mujaurai has now joined Islah and the other groups have gone their separate ways. The CP now includes part of EAIM, part of Qaza'if Alhaq and Herui's Cooperative Party . Read more

The Alliance has agreed to unify its military wing under one command. The execution of this agreement is reportedly based on two phases, which will include confidence-building measures for some member organizations who wanted firmer assurances. The final resolution is reported to make no references to Eritrea's 1997 constitution. Gedab News had been told by reliable sources that the Alliance would accept with revisions?the 1997 Constitution. Background The last time the two prominent Eritreans were elected to similar positions was at the first congress of the ELF, in 1971, when Herui T Bairou and Abdella Idris were elected the Executive Vice President and Head of Military Office respectively. At the time, Mr. Seyoum O/Michael was serving a ten-year sentence in an Ethiopian jail for his role in organizing the student movement of the mid-sixties. Movement for Democracy & Change Meanwhile, representatives of Movement for Democracy and Change (MDC) and Eritrean Peoplea1s Liberation Front-Democratic Party (EPLF-DP) issued a joint resolution agreeing to work together to speed up the struggle for justice, and to create an environment of Peace and tranquility for Eritreans. Mr. Semere Kesete, the former president of Asmara University student union who fled in July from an Eritrean jail after a year in detention without charges, and Mr. Mussie Ephrem, a citizen who gained prominence by suing the government of Eritrea for violating Eritreans?human rights, represented MDC. EPLF-DP was represented by Mr. Mesfin Hagos, a member of the PFDJ Reformers movement (G-15), who escaped arrest because he was on a medical-related visit to the United States. in September 18, when eleven of his colleagues were detained by the government.

December 22, 2014source Gedab News has received reliable information that 13 children who were escaping from Eritrea were gunned down and thrown in ditches somewhere between Ghindae, Eritrea, and Port Sudan, Sudan. The specific location of their murder is not known. The 13 children were part of a group of 16 children who had arranged with an Eritrean trafficker to smuggle them out using the “Ghindae-Port Sudan route” out of Eritrea four months ago. Escapees do not report such incidents immediately for fear of retribution. The Ghindae Route is one of several used by Eritreans to escape from Eritrea. According to UNHCR, the number of Eritreans seeking asylum in Europe has tripled in 2014 over the previous year. The agency added that the number of Eritreans seeking refuge in Ethiopia in October 2014 was 5,000, a significant increase over the previous year, with unaccompanied minors also increasing, and that the number of Eritreans seeking refuge in Sudan has been about 1,000 per month. Highlighting the dire straits the country is in, the parents of the 13 children who were murdered are mostly government officials. One of them is a colonel in Sawa (name withheld) whose wife, a veteran of the EPLF, is in Toronto visiting her daughter. Of the thirteen children, 3 of them were their daughters, sisters aged 14, 18 and 19. The news has roiled the city of Toronto, Canada, and Eritreans who heard the news are in a state of shock. Our source says, “It is tragic! Father and mother, both ‘Tegadelti’ [veterans of Eritrea’s war of independence], attempted to smuggle their three children out of a country they spent a lifetime to liberate, and all three were brutally murdered.” The fate of 3 of the 16 children is unknown. Presumably, they are the ones that confirmed the death of the 13 Eritreans they were traveling with. It is likely that the families of the 13 children, all in Eritrea, have been notified of the death of their children and the city will once again be engulfed by grief. We will provide you with additional information as it becomes available. awate.com Inform. Inspire. Embolden. Reconcile.

A meeting of the Executive Committee of the ELF-RC ended in the resignation of Ahmed Nasser, Chief of the Unity Affairs office. The ELF-RC has been marred with internal crisis since its delegation walked out in the final stages of the Eritrean opposition organizations meeting in Addis Ababa in October 2002, protesting the nomination of Herui Tella Bairu to the top position. Since then, the whole energy of the ELF-RC was consumed in sometimes bitter exchange of debates among its members; one part supporting the leadership to stay away from the Eritrean National Forces (ENA) and the other pressuring it to mend fences and return to the ENA. Several Eritrean entities and foreigners, including the Ethiopian and Sudanese governments, had offered to mediate between the ELF-RC and the ENA but were not successful. Last month, the elected regional leadership of the ELF-RC in Germany was disbanded in the presence of Seyoum Oqbamichael, the Chairman of the organization, and Mengisteab Asmerom, head of the organizational affairs office. Some members had questioned the decision. A longtime member of the ELF-RC said, regional leadership can only be elected in a regional congress; you cant call a public meeting and disband an elected leadership by executive order and elect a regional leadership. Another said that, the regional leadership was involved in activities that damaged the organizational structure of the ELF-RC and it was necessary to replace it. The following members of the executive office attended the ELF-RC leadership meeting that was held in Khartoum, Sudan, from 15 to 18 March 2003. 1- Seyoum Oqbamichael, Chairman of the organization 2- Ahmed Nasser, Unity Affairs 3- Mengisteab Asmerom, Organizational Affairs 4- Khelifa Osman, Finance 5- Dr. Beyene Kidane, Information 6- Dr. Sahle Tesfay, Social Affairs 7- Mohammed Ali Ibrahim, Military Affairs 8- Ibrahim Mohammed Ali, Spokesperson (Non executive office member) 9- Berhane Kidane, secretary, spokespersons office (Non executive office member) The leadership of the ELF-RC could not agree on a resolution regarding the impasse between the ENA and the ELF-RC and there was a clear division between those who wanted to rejoin the Alliance and those who wanted to remain alone. On March 18, 2003, the spokespersons office had issued a statement stating that it had discussed aspects of the outcome of the dialogue and after considering its reflections on the arena, the joint meeting established the fact that the talks have reached a dead end, marking the negative turn that would rule out all possibilities of reviving ELF-RC membership in the ENA, due to unwarranted and unacceptable preconditions put forth by the ENA... The spokespersons statement didnt mention that Ahmed Nasser, the head of the dialogue committee and unity affairs office, had resigned his executive position. Reached by phone in Khartoum, a sympathizer of the ELF-RC commented that the diverse background of its members is the main strength of the ELF-RC and risking it will throw the organization into irrelevance. Gedab News has learned that there is enough call and pressure from the members of the ELF-RC to hold an immediate meeting of the Revolutionary Council to solve the crisis that has weakened the organization. Meanwhile, unconfirmed news indicated that the ENA has lifted the suspension of the ELF-RC from the membership of the ENA and that the news will be formalized in the ENAs meeting currently underway. We are aware that what seems urgent to us--because it affects our loved ones--may not be considered newsworthy by the standards of a large and international news organization, like the BBC. (Or the Voice of America, which, unbelievably enough, had to wait for Awate.com’s Gedab News to break the news of the arrest of its own reporter before it filed a report!) We will even allow for the fact that foreigners have a difficult time establishing sources in a society where free speech is criminalized and every reporter is, according to the government, a spy or a potential spy.

  43. “The Year of The Broom”

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

When Gedab News reported that the G-I has revoked the diplomatic passports of the Reformers, the Eritrean Embassy in the United States rushed out a “clarification” which, as usual, includes a generous dose of half-truths and concealments. We will let Mr. Mesfin Hagos address the question of whether he was given a ride by the Embassy and what his conversations with Ambassador Girma Asmerom actually were. What the Embassy’s paper (whose audience, once again, was not Eritreans but the institutions of the donor nations) wanted to do is convey the impression that revocation of diplomatic passport of people who are no longer diplomats is perfectly logical and is not a big deal because an Eritrean, any Eritrean, could go to his nearest Embassy and get a passport. We know that is a blatant lie. If that was the case, why didn’t Ambassador Girma, who knew that the honorable Mr. Mesfin Hagos was going to Eritrea, call his former comrade and say, “please surrender your diplomatic passport and here’s a copy of an ordinary passport”? The answer is simple: as Eritreans who have been made stateless by their government will testify, the Reformers will not be given an Eritrean passport unless they renounce their stands, condemn their colleagues and ask for forgiveness. They did not want a popular man to return to the country. A man who, according to some, got more votes than Isaias and would have been elected president had it not been for the vote rigging of the "G-I" Such are the ways of the G-I.

Meanwhile, as has been reported several times by Gedab News, the regime has been repositioning the soldiers throughout the flashpoints of the Eritrea-Ethiopia border. It has dug trenches and moved heavy armaments in the Tsorona-Midfae Walta area. In the Badme front, (and inside the so-called demilitarized zone) it has placed tanks and anti-aircraft missiles.

Of the 9 deaths reported by Aigaforum.com, Gedab News can confirm the death of General Oqbe Abraha. However, the cause of his death is unclear: there are conflicting reports that it is due to wounds inflicted from his attempted suicide or his long battle with a severe case of asthma. What is known is that he was rushed to Halibet Hospital and Glass Hospital and the nurse who leaked the story of his admission was subsequently arrested.

[27] Other meetings include those convened at various times by the President of the University of Asmara, Dr Wodeab Yishak, the former Advocate General Mr Mussa Hussien Naib, another senior government officer by the name Mr Andeberhan Woldegiorgis and the Eritrean Ambassador to South Africa Mr Tesfamichaeal Gerahtu himself. In all of these meetings, several controversial issues were raised by students which were not adequately addressed by the conveners. In all instances, the officials, especially the Ambassador, did nothing but only intimidated those who asked challenging questions, discontinued their bursaries, revoked their passports, made them deported and arrested arbitrarily by South African authorities under the pretext of contractual obligations.
