Background information
Refugees Drown in Attempted Sudanese Smuggling The first Eritrean refugees start to arrive in the Eastern Sudan was in 1968 during the early years of Eritrea’s war of independence against Ethiopia. Among the three biggest camps in eastern Sudan, Shagarab currently houses more than 15,000 mostly Eritrean refugees in addition to some Ethiopians and Somalis.

AT LEAST eight asylum-seekers have drowned trying to cross a river in Sudan during an attempt to smuggle them out of a refugee camp, the UN refugee agency said Thursday.
The accident happened as a group of from the Shegarab-1 camp in the eastern state of Kassala tried to cross the Atbara river on Wednesday evening.
“There was an attempt to smuggle some of these asylum-seekers out of the camp and they were being transported on four rickety, small fishing boats,” said Mohammed Adar, the UNHCR representative in Sudan.
One of the boats sank and “eight bodies have been found and two are still missing,” he said, adding that another 10 people swam to safety and returned to the camp.
The other boats crossed successfully, Adar said, without saying how many people had managed to leave the camp.
Adar said the United Nations had not verified the nationality of the dead but said the government had sent a team to investigate.
Their intended destination was unknown, but eastern Sudan has a significant refugee population, the majority Eritreans.
Nearly 110,000 Eritreans currently live throughout Sudan.
The Shegarab-1 camp is jointly run by the Sudanese government and the UN and houses 15,000 people, mostly asylum-seekers.

On Wednesday evening 24th of December 2014 at least eight Eritreans from the Shegarab-1 refugee camp in the eastern state of Kassala have drowned trying to cross the Atbara river in Sudan. Althogh the cause of the accident is under investigation, according to eye-witnesses they were drowned in an attempt to run away from armed Rashiada tribe men that follows them to abduct and held them for ransom. While being held in captivity, the people will be subjected to torture, sexual violence or other types of abuse and could be killed or will die as a result of mistreatment.
Today 25th December 2014 as many people from the Shegarab-1 refugee camp went to the place of accident to search for the bodies of dead that has not been found, the armed Rashiada tribe men come again and took an identified people by force to unknown location. The Eritreans in return took 2 Rashiada tribe men and currently holding then as a house arrest in the Shegarab-1 refugee camp.
Now the Rashiada tribe men are completley circling the Shegarab-1 refugee camp and could attack the inoccent Eritrean refugees at any time. Therefore we call the urgent attention of UNHCR Sudan, IOM Sudan, and the Government of Republic of the Sudan to protect Eritrean refugees in a severe state of danger!
