  2. Eritrea: Reliable news, analysis & information by awate - Testimony of Eritreans Deported From Malta Jailed In Dahlak

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

In 2002-2003, Elsa Chyrum, an Eritrean human rights activist, was actively involved in assisting Eritreans who were held in captivity in Malta. Due to her efforts (and other human rights activists), many Eritreans were spared deportation to Eritrea. The following testimony was provided to her by those who, despite the appeals of many human rights organizations and contrary to the UNHCR charter, were deported to Eritrea in 2002. The testimony, provided by Elsa, is published in Tigrigna. Here below is Awate's translation into English, as literal as possible. For ease of reading we have inserted sub-headings. We ask everyone to ensure that every human rights organization in the world receives a copy.

  7. What is behind the scenes for the denial of Naizgi's body burial in Eritrea?

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

Naizghi Kiflu is a veteran of the armed struggle and has served as security chief, ambassador to Russia, deputy Interior Minister and Minister of Information under the Isaias regime. In 2008, Eritrean human rights activist Elsa Chyrum, with the help of British NGO Redress, attempted to develop a case against him for committing “crimes against humanity” for his role as Deputy Revolutionary Guard (“Halewa Sewra”), deputy to the Interior Minister (Ministry of Local Government) in the early 1990s, as well as for his role as a Minister of Information in 2001 when he ordered the arrest and exile of Eritrea’s journalists and, eventually, the crackdown against non-sanctioned churches. British prosecutors interviewed several Eritrean victims in Europe but the case was never brought to trial.

Elsa Chyrum, a “human rights activist” of Eritrean origin, now residing in Britain, and an NGO known as Redress tried to bring Naizghi Kiflu to a British criminal court for alleged crimes they believed Naizghi had committed in Eritrea against Eritreans. They failed. Elsa & Co. failed because, it seems, their case was primarily based on only the statements of three “main witnesses”. Their case did not pass the first legal test. It was dismissed before it was even brought to a British court of law. Here is how Leonard Vincent of Reporters Without Borders put it:

But Elsa Chyrum continues to call Naizghi Kiflu “a criminal”. We have to remind our sister that human rights are essentially equal rights; and one of the basic tenets of human/equal rights is that a person is regarded innocent until proven guilty by a court of law. Elsa & Co. could not prove that Naizghi was a criminal in a court of law, and therefore, have no legal grounds to mischaracterize Naizghi Kiflu as “a criminal” just because they have got statatements (without additional evidence) from some accusers. Elsa & Co. have to desist from violating the human rights of Naizghi Kiflu’s and family’s, or anyone else’s for that matter, based on nothing but hearsay or unproven allegations. That is not protecting human rights. Doing so is immoral. If Elsa & Co. cannot prove their case in a court of law, their continued mischaracterization is nothing legitimate but a political statement. Violating the human rights of the accused in an effort to protect those of the accusers is contrary to, or at least inconsistent with, the principles of human or equal rights. Elsa & Co. are, knowingly or unknowingly, violating both principles/rights.

General Gerezghier Andemariam, better known by his nickname "Wuchu", enjoys a close relationship with President Isaias Afwerki, and is one of the four commanders of Eritrea which has been segmented into four military operations zones. The authority of the commanders exceeds that of the police force and the regional governors. The commanders and their deputies stand accused by many Eritreans, including the thousands who have left to seek asylum elsewhere, of excesses in the name of "order." 12. Timisoara: 47 Eritrean refugees arrived from Tunisia

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

Read full source paragraph (4,223 characters)

It has happened. Nobody has thought about it before, to come to Timisoara-Romania. Eritrean refugees who have been suffering for long, they are now relieved from all the past sufferance and have seen international protection for the first time. It is small transit center, but it hosts very diverse and complicated testimonies of refugees. Nobody can either write or narrate it all. It is very long and complicated; they have cried and suffered a lot. Yet, everything has an end. The history starts as these refugees plan to escape Eritrea. Fleeing the closed country by itself is a mystery. Very fortunately, and unlike those who remained there, these refugees managed to arrive neighboring Ethiopia or Sudan. The sufferance hardly remained in Eritrea, rather it migrate with them. Yet, the sufferance was different as it was happening abroad. The way to reach Khartoum is unimaginable; to reach there many lives were paid. And the most difficult decision was the plan to cross the terrible Sahara. These refugees buried tens and hundreds of Eritreans in the sandy desert, may God receive their soul. Those who luckily arrive Libyan territory, they were welcomed to inhuman detentions. The extents of human right violation in Libya are known to everyone, but Eritrean refugees are the witness for it. How many died in Ra’es Jedida? How many suffered in Misurata, Zileten, Garabuli, Zawiyah or Twaisha detention centers? How many innocents were killed in Ganfuda, Benghazi with cold blood? Or how many Eritreans beaten, robbed, or killed with knife in Libyan streets? Nobody has an answer for these questions, except he or she will say a lot of them. At the time of sufferance, all migrant workers and Eritrean refugees cursed Libyans for their cruel habit, and wished to see bad day of Libyans. By the end of the day, the day has really come. Now after all the sufferance of Eritreans in Libya has ended, Eritrean refugees are wishing all the best for Libyans, they forgot everything. When Libyans start their revolution, another round of sufferance came to Eritreans and all Sub-Saharan immigrants sieged in Libya. The word “MERCENARIES” became headache after a rumor heard that Col. Gaddafi is hiring African fighters to suppress popular uprising. Eritrean refugees could not leave their rooms for food shopping. It was very hard time there. The work of Eritrean and non-Eritrean activists did unbelievable work in trying to evacuating the desperate. John Stauffer of ATDE (USA), Don Mussie Zeray of Agenzia Habeshia (Italy), Elsa Chyrum of HRC-E (UK), Eritrean activists in Switzerland and many others did their best. The work of freelancers, bloggers and journalists was also very helpful. Gabriele Del Grande was among the most hardworking bloggers to open the blind eye in the European frontiers. Many Eritreans, young and enthusiastic activists from Tripoli also did their best in exposing the amount of sufferance from inside Tripoli. Yet, all this trial did very little thing in evacuation of Eritreans from Libya. Thus, Eritrean refugees loss their hope of evacuation and NATO starts aerial bombing. Pushed by this, hundreds of Eritreans died in the sea in desperate trial of reaching Italy. The rest crossed to the west and arrived Shousha camp of Tunisia. Now, those who had resettlement programs to USA and the Netherlands or other countries got some hope. With the help of the external pressure and the work of UNHCR & IOM in Tunisia, first 30 Eritreans arrived in Timisoara in April 20. Then, many groups followed them and arrived Timisoara Transit Center and they are enjoying some form of freedom under international protection. The work of GTR, IOM and UNHCR in running the camp is evident. With all its drawbacks, the Romanian government is working very hard in meeting the need of the desperate who suffered for more than six years all in North Africa, Libya in particular. After all, another group of Eritreans are expected to arrive in the coming weeks, thus the Department of Homeland Security will start to screen the refugees as a final stage in the resettlement process. They are hoping the sufferance to end here, and looking very far beyond the Atlantic… it will soon happen!!!

  13. EXODUS OF ERITREA’S YOUTH TO CONTINUE TILL ISAYAS’ EXIT

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

The Survivor: The first contact we had starting in the spring of 2002 was the ELF-RC. We talked to their Khartoum and Frankfurt offices from the detention barracks. We always talked with Drar Mentai of ELF-RC in Khartoum and Dr. Yussuf Berhanu and Negusse Tsegai in Frankfurt. They were very helpful and we in Malta heard with satisfaction about the messages their organization was sending to the President of Malta, to Amnesty International and other humanitarian organizations. This campaign made many Eritreans aware of our plight. We also recall of what Arta’a of the same organization has done in Kassala a year ago in convincing the Sudanese authorities to stop deporting to Eritrea of about 60 Eritrean youth who were returned from Libya. Former detainees in Malta will also always remember the indomitable Father Mintoff and his Peace Lab, and Aba Marino of Milano who was among the first to reach us. I am also thankful to others who gave support to the cause of the asylum seekers in Malta during 2003, among them Elsa Chyrum, and in doing so drew international attention to the suffering of Eritrans in Malta and, hopefully, in other places.

This is part of a series of testimonies she has provided by Eritrean political prisoners who were detained in Gelalo, Dehlak Islands, and Karsheli. It was in mid-July 2001. The committee of university of students were expressing their opposition, legally, to the call of the Ministry of Education that every university student should report for the harvest drive. Point by point, they provided a rebuttal to the president of University of Asmara, Dr. Woldeab Ishak, that the call is not doable. To mention some of the points made:

  16. The continued miserably suffering of Eritrean peoples

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

Afar People are continuously deprived of the basic rights and they have been restricted all sound because they belong to the Afar ethnic minority group, as the State does not have any confident in Afar. These situations have caused the Afar several physiological and mental distress and they are living in constant fear. The Eritrean security forces closed down Afar business and revoked their passports and prevented them from travelling abroad to carry on their commercial business, and as a result made the family’s life miserable. It was like the whole Afar people were being kept in prison in their own home. Recourses show that since independence from Ethiopia in 1993, Eritrean peoples have faced economic, political and social problems desperately. Thirty years of war have left the country devastated, more than 750 000 people fled Eritrea, taking refuge in neighbouring countries, such as Sudan, Yemen, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, Europe, US, Australia etc. Again, during the border war with Ethiopia in 1998 – 2000, approximately 356 000 peoples were forced to leave the country and became refugees. More than 310 000 people were displaced within the country, mainly the Afar and the Kunama Ethnic Minority Groups (EMG). Many Afar families cannot get grain even in their own town. “Any attempt to get maize, wheat or other type of grain from elsewhere has become an illegal activity” said the Eritrean Human Rights Activist Elizabeth/Elsa Chyrum, 2009.
