  1. ‘After being freed by traffickers, 611 Eritrean refugees reached the state of Israel’ says Human rights activist

Unfortunately, they are sometimes insufficient to prevent humanitarian tragedies taking place, or to save lives. This is not the case, however, for the long campaign that EveryOne Group and other NGOs involved in defending the rights of refugees has carried out to protect sub-Saharan migrants in Northern Sinai.

On Wednesday, November 9th, 2011, even if there was no mention of it in the media, another miracle took place. After the story of the prisoners in the Sinai was broadcast by the CNN in a documentary made in collaboration with EveryOne Group and the New Generation Foundation for Human Rights; after the news of the trafficking in human beings and organs was reported in the world’s most important newspapers, along with the killings, the episodes of rape, and the crimes committed by Egyptian border guards, it finally appeared in the Egyptian media (from the Daily News Egypt to the state TV). So much attention was then focused on the North Sinai Governorate that it has made it very difficult for the traffickers to carry out their dirty work.

EveryOne Group has now asked the High Commissioner for Refugees to ensure that the refugees are protected and resettled in the EU, without the threat of deportation. There will be no security for them while the possibility of deportation still exists. Although we must not lower our guard, we can be satisfied with the results this new form of activism (which uses the Internet, but also exposes itself on the frontline, running serious risks to save human lives) can achieve in today’s troubled world, a world that is still far from the ideal of peace and social justice.

  2. Corruption, Mafia and Religious Terrorism Behind the Human Organs Trafficking in Egypt

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

Rome/Arish, November 8, so11. EveryOne Group is continuing its investigations, humanitarian actions and relations with international institutions and NGOs in an attempt to combat the terrible phenomenon of human organ trafficking. Over the last few days, after working with the CNN and other media to bring this odious trafficking to the attention of public opinion worldwide, our human rights defenders have sent new witnesses accounts and evidence to the international agencies that are committed to fighting the human organs trade. We have also started to collaborate with the COFS (Coalition for Organ-Failure Solution), a non-profit international health and human rights organization that is attempting to combat the trafficking of humans for organs and put an end to the exploitation of the poor as a source of organ and tissue supply. Here, in summary, are the updates about the trafficking in human organs in Egypt that we have sent to the international authorities, NGOs, and the media.

It has two red entrance doors and is guarded round the clock by four armed men. There are three other modern buildings with red roofs under construction nearby. Abu Musa lives in a three-storey house not far from the hideout, with a warehouse at the back, a pine tree and several prickly pears. To get about, the traffickers drive a 2011 Toyota pick-up (probably a Toyota Cruise). The vehicle is white and blue with a red stripe, and a number 5726 licence plate. A result so encouraging it led the CNN to start the Freedom Project (with the collaboration of the entire network of NGOs working against human trafficking) and to support the humanitarian work of activists with even greater conviction. Meanwhile EveryOne Group and its partners have filed fresh complaints to the Egyptian and international authorities against the traffickers, and supplied details of the traffickers and their hideouts. Since the majority of the smugglers are Palestinian, and prominent members of terrorist organizations - Abu Khaled, Abu Ahmed, Abu Mahmoud, Abu Abdallah and others - the complaint has also been sent to the Palestinian authorities.

EveryOne Group and the network of NGOs working against trafficking, however, is completing a report that identifies the traffickers still active, those responsible for dozens of murders, and episodes of violence, rape and brutal acts against migrants. The main perpetrators of these atrocities are Abu Musa and Abu Abdullah. The report will accompany a complaint for crimes against humanity initiated by EveryOne Group and its partners to the Egyptian, Palestinian and international authorities, as well as the International Criminal Court.

For our part, after reporting his condition to FrontLine (an international organization that defends activists throughout the world) and the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, we are in constant contact with Hamdy, offering what support we can. Hamdy is a candidate for the Makwan Prize, a symbolic recognition that EveryOne Group awards each year to a human rights defender. New Generation Foundation for Human Rights has confirmed that the Bedouin special force (which acts together with the Egyptian police and intelligence services) is continuing its security operations against the smugglers in an attempt to stop the trafficking of migrants. "Previously there were 30 leaders of this criminal trade," says Hamdy, "but currently only 6 remain, and they have pledged to stop the slave trade by January 1, 2012. However, we must continue our humanitarian campaign to ensure that the criminals do not feel safe to resume their terrible trafficking. If we, EveryOne Group, along with the other NGOs continue to work hard, this tragic phenomenon will stop completely."

Rome/Sana'a, December 21th, 2011. An airline official is arbitrarily trying to deport four Eritrean refugees who were stranded in the airport for a month. This is the first time Yemen has deported asylum seekers against their will. EveryOne Group, Eritrean Concern, ICER and other Human Rights organizations are asking the UNHCR to condemn the action as strongly as possible and ask the Yemeni Government to stop the unjust deportation of fellow human beings to Eritrea. We are also asking the High Commissioner to exercise the necessary diplomatic pressure to ensure that similar events do not occur again in the future. The NGOs have also sent to the government of Yemen a condemnation of the action taken against the four Eritreans, pointing out that, if Yemen is not willing to accord the right of refugee status according to the 1951 UN Convention, to at least provide them the opportunity to travel to a nearby third country where they will be given temporary refuge.

Milan, May 5, 2012. Note from EveryOne Group: the international campaign for the salvation of 118 Eritrean prisoners has achieved important results. Over 50 young refugees have already been transferred to Ethiopia where they are now in good health. Together with the NGO Gandhi, we are constantly asking the UNHCR to follow the other refugees, and ensure they too are taken to Ethiopia. In addition to the UNHCR, the OHCHR and the European Parliament will also be monitoring the fate of the other Eritrean prisoners in Egypt. As soon as they too are safe, we will post the news.

According to the information released by EveryOne Group, most of the refugees have come from the prison camps run by traffickers in northern Sinai, where they were subjected to torture, beatings and rape. In the last few days, 118 Catholic young Eritrean men were summoned by the prison guards one by one, and asked to sign documents in which they agreed to voluntary repatriation. When the refugees refused, explaining that they would be persecuted in Eritrea — and in many cases murdered — the guards subjected them to torture and beatings, forcing them to sign the papers. The Muslim Eritreans did not suffer the same treatment. The young men who signed the papers are now awaiting deportation. In the light of the extremely serious situation outlined above, does the Commission not think it should make an urgent appeal to the Minister for the Interior of the Arab Republic of Egypt, and to the Egyptian embassies, to ensure that those responsible for torturing and beating the 118 refugees are brought to justice and that the Eritrean prisoners receive international protection as provided for under the Geneva Convention on Refugees?

For the attention of the UNHCR, the Italian Government, the European Commissioner for Human Rights Rome, December 19th, 2011 Mr. Kidan Asmeron, born in Asmara (Eritrea) on April 23rd, 1977 was arrested at Rome airport by the Italian authorities on December 14th, 2011. The young man, who comes from Eritrea, a country where there is a serious humanitarian crisis underway, requested international protection, pointing out that he had already suffered severe persecution in Eritrea: two years in prison for refusing compulsory enlistment, and inhuman and degrading treatment. Kidan Asmeron fled from Eritrea to the Sudan, where he lived for two years and where he made contact with his sister in Germany. The Italian police allowed him to make a phone call to his sister, at 8.30 am.The young man tried to explain that because of his refugee condition, he did not have all the necessary documents, only a passport and that it was necessary to make contact with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to clarify his humanitarian position. The authorities, however, ignored the requests of the young man, who unsuccessfully appealed to the Geneva Convention on Refugees. The authorities made no contact with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, but instead decided to deport the refugee to Turkey. But why Turkey? The authorities gave no explanation, but informed the refugee that the deportation had been decided because his documents were not valid for Italy. That same day, on December 14th, 2011, the Italian authorities forced the refugees to board a flight to Istanbul. Kidan was able to contact his sister from Istanbul at 8 p.m. He was being held in the airport police station. He communicated his arrest to his sister and told her he did not have, even in Istanbul, the right to an interpreter or any contact with the UNHCR. EveryOne Group, in contact with Kidan's sister, has launched an urgent appeal to the UNHCR and the Turkish Government asking them not to deport the refugee back to Eritrea, where he would suffer imprisonment, inhumane and degrading treatment and perhaps even death, as has happened to many other refugees unjustly returned to Eritrea. EveryOne Group also calls on the Italian Government to review its position about the young man, a position that openly violates the Geneva Convention of 1951 and that risks - through an unexplained deportation to Turkey - to put an innocent refugee, already hit by a serious persecution, in a life-threatening situation. It is important that the Italian Government urgently communicate with the Turkish Government to arrange the return of the young to Italy or otherwise transfer Kidan to a safe country.

Milan, March 11th, 2011. According to witness accounts taken by the Physicians for Human Rights in Jaffa from a young Eritrean refugee, the Israeli defence forces have pushed back at the Egypt border a group of 67 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. The migrants, according to the boy’s statement, had just been released by traffickers in northern Sinai, after the payment of a ransom by their families. The refugees, in captivity, would have suffered ill-treatment, torture and abuse. The refoulement of refugees and asylum seekers is a serious violation of the 1951 Geneva Convention, a treaty which was also signed by Israel. What makes these actions even more hateful, is that Israeli military authorities have ordered the young soldiers to commit such a crime, when many of their own grandparents in the past experienced captivity and the horrors of the Holocaust. A condition very similar to that suffered by the African migrants who had fled persecution in their own countries and then fallen victim to terrible abuses in the modern concentration camps run by traffickers in northern Sinai. That is why EveryOne Group, an international organization for human rights, is calling on the government and military leaders of Israel to open an inquiry into the dynamics and responsibilities of this refusal to grant protection, and to strive with all diplomatic means to ensure that the 67 African refugees rejected in Egypt are identified and taken back to Israel, where they have the right to apply for political asylum. At the same time, Everyone Group is asking the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the Commissioner for Human Rights of the Council of Europe to stigmatize the pushing back of refugees on the Israeli border and to ensure all procedures are implemented to provide international protection to the 67 African migrants who were unfairly rejected.

EveryOne Group denounces the ruthless murder of an Eritrean refugee, in Sinai. We also denounce as for years the Egyptian government is aware of the crimes of trafficking in northern Sinai, but does nothing to stop them, to free the hostages and to prosecute those criminals. Behind the trafficking of human beings and organs move movements of holy war, mafia and corrupt authorities. Finally we ask the international institutions because they are indifferent to assist to the martyrdom of many young migrants. Here, the emails from Thomas T., cousin of the young victim. Roberto Malini, co-president of EveryOne Group.

There are currently about 300 Eritrean refugees being held in the Aswan prison in appalling sanitary conditions and subjected to inhuman and degrading treatment. According to the Italian NGO EveryOne Group, efforts to tackle the problem by a reluctant Egyptian government may have been hampered by limitations placed upon it by the 1978 Camp David Accords whereby its troops on this border must be armed lightly. The wealthy Bedouin, on the other hand, are heavily armed. “If Egypt and Israel fail to sign a new agreement on the Sinai, trafficking in migrants, slaves, children and human organs will continue in the future."

EveryOne Group, an international human rights organization based in Italy, and Facebook Group “Save African refugees in the northern Sinai” have filed a complaint with the Egyptian authorities for the murder of two young Eritrean men. Their names were Goytom and Asmerom. The two boys were killed in Rafah, in northern Sinai, on December 11th, 2010 at 16:30. The traffickers shot them in front of many Eritrean, Ethiopian, Somali and Sudanese witnesses. We have not disclosed the surnames of the victims to ensure the safety of their families back in Eritrea. These families are already the victims of the humanitarian crisis in their country and the heavy extortion by the traffickers. Their full names, however, are known to the migrants who have lived in the same detention camp in Rafah. The murderers have subjected migrants to continued violence, torture, and extortion. The tragedy took place in a fruit orchard south of Rafah, near a government building and a former Christian church that has now been converted into a school. There is also a mosque nearby. The fruit orchard is already known to police for the presence of human beings who are being illegally held in ten metal shipping containers. The shipping containers are buried below ground and the migrants are forced to remain there until their relatives have paid their ransom.

The Palestinian Bedouin, Abu Khaled, (or Khalid) ordered his men to kill the two Eritrean refugees. Abu Khaled is known by the police for his trafficking in human beings, weapons and drugs. He has been charged with the formation of armed gangs and committing violent crimes. Khaled works in collusion with the terrorist organizations Hamas and Al Qaeda. The gang is part of the organized crime network that operates in northern Sinai (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/expat/expatnews/6817385/Egypts-Gaza-smugglers-shrug-off-reports-of-border -barrier.html, http://www.thenational.ae/news/worldwide/middle-east/roads-to-riches-run-deep-in-rafah?pageCount=3, http://www.twnside.org .sg/title2/resurgence/2009/221-222/cover8.htm). The gang uses about 20 armed criminals to watch over, using torture and blackmail, the African migrants in the detention camp. According to our information, part of the group of African migrants is being held in the district of al-Mahdeyya, south of Rafah. There was a police operation in the village of al-Mahdeyya in September 2010. Unfortunately, some police officers fired on a small group of refugees who had fled from the traffickers. EveryOne Group also reports the murder of other six young Africans. They were assassinated in front of the group we are following. We have also reported to the authorities the connection between the drug traffickers and organized crime, which runs the black market for human organs. Four young Eritreans were taken to an illegal clinic, where they had a kidney removed. The four boys have not returned and may well have been murdered.

After filing this complaint EveryOne Group and Facebook Group “Save African refugees in the northern Sinai “ ask the Egyptian police force to intervene immediately at the traffickers' property. It is of the utmost importance to free the refugees still being held in the shipping containers and prosecute those responsible for the abductions, killings, tortures, cases of rape and extortion. We have also received reports about other groups of migrants being detained in northern Sinai by criminal gangs belonging to the Rashaida and Sawarqa tribes, and the families of Abu Khaled, Abu Ahmed, Sawarqa, Hussein Abu Mohammed, and others.

A network of robbers linked to international organized crime. The names of the most dangerous traffickers and their links with armed struggle organizations. An appeal to the governments of the Republic of Egypt, the Palestinian territories, the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the authorities of Israel, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya, Tunisia, and those of Dubai, Saudi Arabia, the European Union and countries outside Europe where there are links with the criminal trade underway in Northern Sinai. Rome, January 4th, 2012. EveryOne Group is continuing its campaign against the trafficking of sub-Saharan migrants and human organs in the Sinai, a criminal phenomenon that has continued for many years without the authorities of the Republic of Egypt or the institutions of the Palestinian territories doing anything to block it, despite being aware of the identity and location of the traffickers' hideouts. Before the long international campaign that EveryOne Group is conducting (alongside other organizations for the rights of refugees and the fight against people trafficking) this trafficking in Sinai was ignored by the press and both the local and international authorities.

Today, however, this terrible phenomenon has become public domain. The United Nations, the European Union and the mainstream media of the civilized world have taken notice of the horrors taking place in the Sinai: the kidnappings, the heavy extortion, murders, kidney transplants, cases of torture and rape. However, if this information regarding the plight of migrants in the Sinai dries up, this odious trafficking will continue to be carried out along with the general indifference of the world. We must therefore increase our efforts and transform our anger into civil actions, because the world must stand up and refuse to allow these crimes against humanity to take place. With this fresh report, EveryOne Group is reporting once again the authors of some of the most heinous crimes that have ever been committed by human beings. The complaint will be forwarded to the Egyptian authorities, the authorities of the Palestinian territories, and the authorities of Israel, Sudan, Libya, Ethiopia and Eritrea. All these countries have a role in the phenomenon of trafficking of migrants and organs. It starts out in Eritrea, Ethiopia and Sudan, where gangs of Rashaida Bedouins promise a better life to young Eritreans at risk of persecution or forced conscription. Once the migrants agree to leave for Israel, the trap is sprung. As well as the Rashaida gangs, other gangs are managing the trafficking among the Bedouins of the Sinai. These gangs also use Eritrean, Ethiopian and Sudanese accomplices who communicate with the prisoners and ensure that they ask the family for their ransom money without providing any other information. Some head-traffickers hold Eritrean women prisoner, as wives or concubines, as well as young slaves who have been unable to pay the ransom. Young sub-Saharan women are also sent to work as prostitutes in Egypt and the Palestinian territories, where in recent years the trafficking of women has become particularly well-established yet ignored by the international authorities: http://fr.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1260436032612&pagename=JPArticle/ShowFull To effectively combat trafficking in human beings, we must understand its structure and dynamics. Thanks to witness accounts from refugees, NGOs and human rights defenders are in possession of the names of traffickers, who are members of Palestinian terrorist groups. Jihadist fundamentalism is self-financed by criminal activity. Not surprisingly, jihadist leaders are also members of the Arab-Mafia. Weapons, drugs, prostitution, the slave trade and trade in human organs are sources for funding of the terrorists who have adopted the motto that "the end justifies the means". They work alongside the world's criminal organizations. The paramilitary political organizations work just like the Mafia, making use of cells around the world. Not surprisingly, relatives of prisoners in the Sinai do not only send their payments to Egypt, Israel, Ethiopia and Sudan, but also to Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and in Europe (Switzerland, United Kingdom, France, Sweden). This movement hiding behind pseudo-political ideologies is called the "Arab Mafia" by some analysts. Fundamentalism and armed gangs work together and make the international trafficking of human beings, organs, drugs and weapons the foundation of their criminal activities.

Sinai, an almost lawless land, is the base of religious and political movements of armed struggle (from Egyptian Islamic Jihad to Hamas), and the traffickers in human beings and organs provide the means of financing these movements: http://grendelreport.posterous.com/muslim-brotherhood-terror-in-sinai In Rafah, Al-Gorah, al-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and other cities in the Sinai, Palestinian smugglers operate through the tunnels between the Egyptian and Palestinian sides of Rafah, along the "Philadelphia corridor". These are the barons of weapons, migrants and human organs trafficking. These powerful criminals have possessions in the Egyptian Sinai and in the Palestinian territories, where they move about freely, making use of the workers who until a few years ago worked in the transport of goods through the tunnels, but who in recent years have lost their jobs after Israel granted the free import of many goods: http://english.aljazeera.net/news/middleeast/2010/07/201071692035676597.html The head-traffickers control most of the 1,000 still active tunnels between Rafah and Palestine. The entrances to the tunnels are often within fenced-in Bedouin properties bordered by orchards. After the fall of Mubarak, the traffickers have had even more freedom in the Sinai: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/middle-east/egyptian-military-begins-closing-smuggling-tunnels-near-gaza/2011/09/04/gIQANvy31J_story.html As well as being an important base for Hamas and other organizations of armed struggle, Arish, the capital of the North Sinai Governorate, is a stronghold of Arab and international organized crime: http://nationalstrategy.com/Portals/0/documents/Summer%202011%20NSFR/El%20Arish%20Egypt.pdf Recently, thanks to the campaign against the trafficking in Sinai carried out by EveryOne Group, the New Generation Foundation for Human Rights, ICER and other NGOs, as well as CNN's important contribution with the "Freedom Project" (a key event in the fight against the trafficking of migrants and human organs), several traffickers have spontaneously released hundreds of sub-Saharan refugees: http://www.everyonegroup.com/EveryOne/MainPage/Entries/2011/11/18_Slaves_freed_after_CNN_documentary.html In addition, Bedouin members of the Al-Tiaha tribe clashed with a gang of traffickers from the Nakhalwa tribe and liberated a large group of hostages, most of them Eritreans. Many traffickers and some of the prisoners were killed in the crossfire: http://www.usatoday.com/topics/article/Organizations/Companies/Transportation,+Travel,+Hospitality/Airlines/content.usatoday.com/topics/article/Organizations/Companies/Transportation,+Travel,+Hospitality/Airlines/Hamas/0d6D05DgMf6pu/5 http://www.everyonegroup.com/EveryOne/MainPage/Entries/2011/11/18_Notorious_human_smuggler_shot_dead%3B_611_Eritreans_released.html At the same time, thanks to an initiative by the Salafi groups in Sinai, small Bedouin security forces have been seen in Northern Sinai collaborating with the police. According to the activist Hamdy al-Azazy, president of the New Generation Foundation for Human Rights and observer for Everyone Group, the Bedouin tribes of Sinai are in the process of reaching an agreement to fight the trafficking in human beings and organs alongside the police, and go after the major Palestinian traffickers: Abu Abdullah, Abu Mahmoud, Abu Musa, Abu Khaled, Abu Ahmed and others: http://www.everyonegroup.com/EveryOne/MainPage/Entries/2011/12/2_Sinai_-_An_Important_Step_in_the_Campaign_against_the_Slave_Trade.html The situation in Arish, controlled by trafficking members of the armed struggle movements, is well described in an article published in the Daily News Egypt: http://www.thedailynewsegypt.com/tunnel-business-security-vacuum-main-concerns-for-arish-residents.html With regard to the identities of the traffickers, EveryOne Group has reported them to local and international authorities. In this report we have added some details that may be useful in ensuring their arrest, not only in the Sinai but also in the Palestinian territories - Abu Abdullah is about 35 years old. He wears a beard, has a large family and several Eritrean concubines. He is one of the most violent traffickers, responsible for numerous murders, mutilations and torture. Sadistic with young prisoners, he is a rapist, and often carries out the most brutal crimes himself: http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-4087949,00.html He is very powerful in the Sinai and is well-known in the Palestinian territories where he is one of the leaders of Hamas, as well as a trafficker that Hamas has entrusted with controlling some of the main tunnels. We must point out that Hamas has full control of the network of tunnels that link the two sides of Rafah:

With this report, EveryOne Group is appealing to the Egyptian Government and the Palestinian authorities to undertake investigations aimed at dismantling the hideouts of these traffickers, and to free the hostages, granting them the right to international protection, in consultation with UNHCR, as refugees and victims of trafficking. We are asking them to prosecute the leaders of the people and organ trafficking, their collaborators, and the criminal network that works directly or indirectly with them through collusion, bribery, corruption, and contact with the organized crime groups linked to these terrible acts against humanity. At the same time, EveryOne Group is appealing to the United Nations and the International Criminal Court in The Hague to prosecute - according to the authority granted to those organizations - the abductions, murders, episodes of torture and rape, extortion, and the illegal removal of kidneys and other organs that has been going on, unpunished, for years in the Sinai. Finally, EveryOne Group, which is based in Italy, has appealed for help to the governments of Egypt, Palestine, Israel, Sudan, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Libya, Tunisia, Dubai, Saudi Arabia, the European Union and those countries outside Europe that have links with the trafficking in Northern Sinai, particularly regarding the deposits - through money transfer agencies or bank accounts - of the ransoms paid by the families of prisoners being held hostage. Awaiting an answer and a promise of urgent action aimed at combating the phenomenon of criminal trafficking in the Sinai, we send you our best regards.
