  1. The opposition and PFDJ Leaders are the two sides of the same coin

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

The Awate Team (2007 states that all citizens over the age of 18–anywhere between 400,000-800,000 people have been in a constant state of mobilization for the last 12 years since the proclamation of National Service in 1995. In 2008, Meron Estefanos (2008) states that there are more than 700,000 Eritrean young people conscripted under the national service and many still continue. Some accounts offer even a higher figure. Beshir Abdulkadir - (Jun 25, 2010) in his article 'Reflections On The Eritrean Youth' wrote that on Unlike the betrayal of the PFDJ and similarly the fragile opposition groups that kept wasting many years squabbling over tiny matters, the Eritrean youth by their nature are innocent, patient, tolerant, nationalist and courageous—blind nationalism and bravery that was proved during the hardships that our sovereign nation faced. This quality was automatically set without any motivation or energy. At the beginning, whenever there is a call to defend the nation, the youth were there in the forefront, whenever there is a call to contribute to the national development projects, the youth were there constructing roads, dams, wells, schools, hospitals, etc. However, finally, the youth are tired...very tired; national service has turned into indefinite slavery, successive wars and disastrous loss of brothers and friends coupled simultaneously with abduction and torture for unclear reasons—and terror and fear due to the conspiracies of PFDJ spies and fanatic stalwarts.

  2. (II) The Circular Journey in Search of Eritrea: A “World Distance” that Never Was

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

But this mentality is not confined to Highdefites. It is also rampant among the opposition groups. There are those who are mad how Eritrean refugees are being treated by Arabs but, in their quest for hadnetna, are careful not to offend Arab sensibilities among Eritreans rather than openly attack the alien identities that have victimized their people. And then there are those who openly identify themselves with the Arab cause and try their utmost to protect the victimizes from stigmatization, with the worry that if the truth is told the Arab link might get frayed. A good example of that would be what has lately been going on at Awate.com [Have You Seen This On The Mainstream Media?]. The Awate Team despairing for Gaza victims Think of a very liberal white American who never stops confronting people whenever he hears them use the word “nigger”. One day a neighbor comes running to him in alarm and says, “A n– is raping your daughter around the corner!” Now, why is it that we think this fellow liberal is either out of his mind or doesn’t give a damn about his daughter if he stops to lecture his neighbor about the immorality of using the n-word and how that word happens to stigmatize all of blacks? We would say, “Where in his inner self did he find this sense of outrage at a time when all the outrage he could muster ought to have been directed at saving his daughter?” That picture fits well the Awate Team’s recent reaction to the Gaza-Isareli conflict.

  3. Press Release (4 & Final) Re: The Mediation Between ENA & ELF-RC

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

The Awate Team held discussions on what our role should be with respect to the stalemate. Our debate centered on two of our mission statements: (1) to provide timely and accurate information to Eritreans to enable them to make informed decisions and (2) to be agents for reconciliation. We understood that if we chose the latter, we would be withholding information from our readers. Ultimately, we decided to offer our services as mediators to solve what we preferred to call misunderstanding with the decision that we would not be entangled in a process without a timetable. To this end, we pleaded with the public to be calm and prevent escalation. We received many messages of support from the public encouraging*4 us to pursue the mediation. Equipped with this public encouragement, we held extensive discussions with different personalities including leaders of the ELF-RC and ENA.

  5. EDA Split: Implications for National Unity and Democracy

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

Also to be fair to EDA’s leaders, it is important to say this: whilst leadership is important for moving foreword, I am equally convinced that sometimes ‘good’ leaders face challenges beyond their means to rectify. This is particularly so in the case of the Eritrean society, which assigns all failures to its leaders. Although there are no good reasons for EDA to split early this year, the leaders should not always be accountable for all failures that are beyond their means to identify and then fix. The way forward is to embrace “Top-bottom” and “Bottom-up” accountability, and not only blaming the leaders all the time. The Awate Team, in its Pencil editorial of 1 June 2007 wrote an instructive article titled “Be The Alternative You Seek.”[13] The relevant part of the editorial to this article is the last section, “Do Something – But Do It Right”, where the Awate Team clearly articulates everyone has a role to play, and not making the failure of our opposition groups to achieve tangible outcomes an excuse for inaction.

  6. “The Year of The Broom”

Mentioned in source · source passage · automatic rule, identity unresolved

If it is "The Year of The Broom", it is only because it is the year to sweep old ideologies and enmities, not people. We believe it is also "The Year of The Handshake"--reconciliation amongst Eritreans. The only ones telling us not to do that are the "G-I" whose power consolidation is based on creating enemies and sustaining enmity. The Awate Team
